What are Little Boys Made Of?

James was listening in as I read nursery rhymes to the girls at bedtime. When I finished reading the "snakes and snails and puppy dogs tails" vs. "sugar and spice and everything nice" he looks at me and says, "Are they saying that boys are bad and girls are good?"

Oops. Some things really shouldn't be repeated despite tradition and this rhyme is obviously one of those things.

Nonsense about boys/bad and girls/good. It's just saying that more boys like to put snakes and snails snails into their pockets than girls and that girls would definitely put spice and sugar into their pockets. (maybe boys don't play outside as much as they use to and so they don't know how to hunt for snails--they would like it though.

Hopefully they're not putting puppy dog tails in their pockets.
