My Solo Week

Tim flew to Utah for the week to be with Emily and Ryan (most of you probably know, Ryan was diagnosed with Leukemia a few weeks ago. Click here to get updated about his experience). So while Tim was gone, I had a week of entire evenings free to do whatever I wanted.

This is what I did.

I read.

I am a big fan of reading. I love this picture because that is exactly how I feel about the books that I love.

But I have to admit, I am kind of a book whore. I will read anything just to be reading, even if I don't love it.
I gathered all my library books together from the piles scattered around the house. The end result was embarrassing and more than a little intimidating. I can't help it, it really is an addiction.
So during my solo week, I read this many books (the pile in front).
I finished the top of my denim quilt.
I am actually very pleased with the results. I don't love denim quilts as a rule, but I am currently making quilts out of whatever I just have lying around the house. It is far better to practice on quilts that don't cost tons of money than quilts that do.

But in the end, I love the way the blues all worked out together. I actually spent a lot of time arranging these patches and I really like the results.

I am getting better too...if you notice, almost all my corners on this one match up perfectly.

I broke 5 needles in the making of this top however. Denim is rough on needles.
I started work on my other scrappy quilt project. This strip quilt is cut from all the kids old baby blankets and PJs. It took me so long just to get them laid out that once they were there, I declared it perfect and didn't rearrange anything.

I hadn't realized how long it would take to lay out (my back was sore for the next two days) and I had no real way of preserving the order in ziploc bags since there were sooo many pieces. So I frantically started sewing thinking I needed to at least have the strips together since I was sure Eleanor would be up here messing it all up as soon as possible.

But it turns out, that I needn't have worried. I got burned out, stopped sewing and that was almost two weeks ago and the project is still sitting there, in pretty decent order. Eleanor is more protective of it than I am. She actually yelled at Tim the other morning, "Don't step on Mommy's pieces!"

Thanks for loaning Tim, it was great to have him here. WOW, you can read fast! I love your denim quilt! I've always wanted to make one, but just haven't gotten around to it. Your's looks amazing. I hope you finish your strip one, it looks cute. I bought fabric today to make a baby quilt for a friend. It's all blues, browns, oranges, and cream with a minky back. So fun, I love making baby quilts.

It's not that I read fast, it is that I read 5 hours a day. I just bunked all the kids on the floor of my room at 6:30 and read for the rest of the night.

I hear you're going to Utah in May... us too! Maybe we'll get to see each other? We'll be there the last week in May and the first week in June.

P.S. Your quilts are amazing!
