Dress Up

Gillian loves dressing up in James' Bob the Builder get up. I think she is just adorable in it. However, as cute as I think she is in her construction gear, I really wanted to see her in more girly stuff. So over Thanksgiving, I borrowed Sara's idea (and rotary scissors) and made a super cute, super easy, and super prissy fairy skirt for Gillian's Christmas.

I personally thought it turned out gorgeous and I was so excited to see Gillian in it. However, it wasn't until February that I even got her to try it on and even then, she only allowed it for the picture, just to humor me. So sad.

She loves "break-lets" (anything jewelry) and shoes of all kinds, especially the cute feather shoes in the pictures. She loves pretty purses, adores all things pink and she goes ga-ga over nail polish. I thought a pretty fairy princess skirt was a shoe-in for sure.

But after thinking about it for a bit, I guess there is a difference. The stuff that she does love is more "accessorizing" than dressing up. She loves the accessories of a princess, but not the actual being a princess. Perhaps she'll be the type of woman who has a Harley, but it is pink w/ rhinestones. She reminds me of a T-shirt I saw at the law school: "Princesses can be Lawyers too" (the t-shirt was pink of course).

I am a big fan of letting children be who they want to be, but I confess, I am secretly hoping for a change of mind in favor of the skirt.

I could only get her in the skirt by promising to take pictures of her shoes.

This face kind of looks like a smile, but really, she was whining and pulling on the skirt trying to get it off. She had had enough.

Oh, p.s. I don't know if you remember this conversation, but sometime before the wedding, we were talking about my first date with James. I was making fun of him for his interesting names he wanted to give his children (which, secretly, we both knew were going to be OUR children) and I said I liked the name Evelyn and he said can we call her Evie? and when we were telling you this you said HEY that's what we want to name OUR baby if it's a girl. And I protested a bit? Are you remembering this conversation? Well, I just wanted you to know that if the baby is a girl, and if you want to name her Evelyn-- you can, with no protest from me. (Not like that should have been a factor, but just in case you were worried about it.)

You are so funny. I do remember that conversation now--although I had forgotten it. What an amazingly charitable gesture--I personally think that siblings wants and desires should absolutely be a factor in naming a baby and I don't think wanting a name to yourself is a silly desire.

I think I didn't remember the conversation because even then, deep down inside, I knew the baby's name was probably going to be Eleanor, no matter how much I flirted with other names (if it turns out to be a girl).

I think Evelyn is a truly gorgeous and feminine name however and would hope that someone in the family snatched it up.

Oh! I love Eleanor too! I've always thought it was such an elegant name. Good choice. I'm going to need you on my side when it comes time for us to have children--I need you to help James see the inherent beauty and perfection of these names that I like :)

I love that skirt! Hopefully she'll appreciate it more someday. :D

You can still have hope... Grace was all into dinosaurs and diggers until just recently. Now she's all girl! That skirt is adorable! I might need to get that pattern from you someday.

Buffy, that skirt is too cute! I'd love to know how you made it! ... however, even as cute as it is, I have to side with Gillian. I'd much rather have a new power tool than a new skirt! BTW, congrats on the new baby. She's precious. ... Stephanie (I stole Rick's identity for the purpose of looking at and posting on your blog) :)
